🌟 Tips for Getting the Most from Your GP Visits 🌟

We want every appointment to feel productive and worthwhile for you. Here are some simple ways to help you get the most from your time with your GP and feel more confident and engaged in your healthcare.

🕰️ Book Enough Time
A standard 15-minute appointment is suitable for quick visits, such as a repeat prescription or a blood pressure check. If you have a new health concern or want to discuss more than one issue, please book a longer appointment.
Hearing your story, asking questions, doing a physical examination, and making a plan all take time—and 15 minutes goes quickly.

📝 Make a List (and Share It Early)
It’s easy to walk out of an appointment and realise you forgot to mention something important. Making a list beforehand can help ensure everything is covered.
If you do have a list, let your doctor know at the beginning of the consultation what’s on it—before diving into the first issue. This helps your doctor plan how to use the time most effectively.

🤝 Be Honest
Please don’t downplay your symptoms to avoid fuss, or exaggerate them hoping to get faster care. Honest, accurate information helps your GP give you the best possible treatment and advice.

🗒️ Take Notes or Ask for Written Instructions
Appointments can feel like information overload, especially when you’re unwell or stressed. Taking notes during the consultation—or asking your doctor to write down key points—can help you remember what was discussed.

👥 Bring a Trusted Person
If you’re worried about forgetting something, getting off track, or feeling overwhelmed, bringing a trusted friend or family member to your appointment can help. They can provide support and help you stay focused.

🔁 Follow Up
You may be asked to return for a follow-up appointment, get tests done, or see a specialist. These steps are important parts of your care, so make sure to follow through—and ask questions if you’re unsure what the next steps are. If you are given a referral and you would like us to send it to the specialist on your behalf, please ask one of our receptionists to do this for you when you check-out.

💬 Be part of your own health team
We are all interested in shared decision making.
It’s okay to ask for clarification if something doesn’t make sense—your understanding is important. Try to be mindful of time, but don’t be afraid to speak up if you have a suggestion or need something explained more clearly.

💵 Understand the Costs of Your Care
Check the clinic’s pricing and billing policies in advance to avoid surprises. If cost is a concern, mention it early in your appointment—your GP may be able to suggest more affordable options or tailor a care plan to suit your situation.
