We all check in on different aspects of our health from time to time — blood pressure, cholesterol, skin checks — but lung health is something many of us don’t think about unless there’s a problem.
A recent ABC News article highlights that lung function testing has become less common in general practice, which means some people may be living with reduced lung function without realising it. For many, changes can be gradual and easy to dismiss as “just getting older” or “being a bit unfit”.
If you’ve noticed things like getting puffed more easily than you used to, a persistent cough, or simply feel that your breathing isn’t quite what it once was, now might be a good time to have a quiet check-in with your GP. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong — just that it’s worth a conversation.
*COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) affects and estimated 1 in 13 Australians over the age of 40.
*Differentiating COPD from Asthma is important for correct management.
Lung function testing (spirometry) is available at Bungendore Medical Centre, but you’ll need an appointment with your GP first to talk with you about whether testing is appropriate for you.

Looking after our health isn’t about being alarmed — it’s about staying informed and supported.
