Cardiovascular disease is still one of the most prevalent diseases in Australia and is responsible for 26% of all deaths in the country, despite the positive impact of research into risk factors, medications and interventions.

In Australia, most people at high risk of heart disease do not receive appropriate treatment according to research.

At Bungendore Medical Centre we continue to promote heart health checks and preventative strategies.

We encourage people who are concerned or have had risk factors to consult with their general practitioner about a heart health check/cardiac risk assessment and risk modifications.

The recommended age ranges for assessing cardiovascular disease risk in people without known cardiovascular disease are:

* all people aged 45–79 years

* people with diabetes aged 35–79 years

* Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 30–79 years, and:

* Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 18–29 years with cardiovascular disease risk factors

We especially encourage these people to talk to their doctor about the risk assessment and preventative approaches.
